How to read your child’s NAPLAN results and how we can support your child

Understanding the NAPLAN report

NAPLAN isn’t a pass-or-fail exam. It is a diagnostic snapshot of your child’s skills in literacy and numeracy, benchmarked against national standards. These assessments occur in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 and highlight areas of strength and skills that may require further development.

Your child’s report will show:

  • Their performance across key subject areas – like Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, and Numeracy.
  • Proficiency bands that indicate how your child is tracking against peers.
  • Growth over time, helping you and your child track progress between testing years.

It is important to remember: NAPLAN tests long-term skill development, not rote memorisation. It is less about “studying for a test” and more about building the core skills your child uses daily across all learning areas.

How to help your child improve NAPLAN results: why consistent support matters

Improvement in NAPLAN—or any learning area—comes from consistent, ongoing practice and exposure, not last-minute revision.

Just as children commit time and effort to hobbies, sport, or music, they need the same level of commitment to build confidence and success in Reading, Writing, and Numeracy.

At ARRENDELL Education Charlestown, we support students to develop these essential skills with consistency, and fully qualified teaching guidance.

NAPLAN English tuition
We have long championed the importance of reading from an early age. Our on-site library is updated each term and offers a wide selection of high-quality novels and texts.

In our English classes, we:

  • Analyse literature to build comprehension and critical thinking skills.
  • Develop grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Provide structured writing support—improving both quality and quantity of writing.
  • Encourage a love for reading and writing through engaging discussion and exploration.

NAPLAN Math tuition
Our Math classes go beyond memorisation. We teach students to understand how and why mathematical concepts work, preparing them to:

  • Solve problems in real-world contexts—like cooking (fractions, measurement) or games (probability).
  • Apply strategies confidently and flexibly in unfamiliar scenarios.
  • Build logical thinking and resilience in problem-solving.

Every lesson is designed to be interactive, practical, and supportive, helping students grow their confidence as well as competence.

Talking to your child about their NAPLAN results

NAPLAN is just one tool to help understand how your child is tracking. It should never be a source of stress or comparison.

Instead, use it as an opportunity to:

  • Celebrate strengths and progress.
  • Discuss areas for growth in a positive, constructive way.
  • Model how to ask for help and value ongoing learning, not just for exams.
  • Reassure your child that consistent practice—not perfection—is the goal.
